Dr. Christina O’Malley (shown here with Dr. William Ausich at The Ohio State University) was the first person to extract ancient biomarkers from paleozoic fossils. Characterization of these molecules led to a phylogenetic analysis supporting the hypothesis that stalked echinoderms shared a common ancestor.
